Dr. Kim’s Nailfold Project

A Longitudinal Study on Early Connective Tissue Disease

Tracking Nailfold Capillaroscopy to Detect Early Signs of Scleroderma

Dr. Hyein Kim, MD, MPH, FRCPC

Dr. Kim’s ongoing research will recruit patients who show early signs of a connective tissue disease but don’t yet meet the criteria for a specific diagnosis like scleroderma.

Through regular monitoring of symptoms, immune markers, and nailfold capillaries using a non-invasive imaging tool called nailfold video capillaroscopy (NVC), the study aims to uncover early warning signs of disease progression.

By identifying these early changes, the goal is to improve early diagnosis and treatment—before significant damage occurs. This could lead to better outcomes and quality of life for patients.

We are currently awaiting ethics approval from UBC and will share updates as the study progresses.
